The Northwest Environmental Defense Center (NEDC) is an independent non-profit organization that works to protect that which matters most: clean air, clean water, healthy forests, biodiversity, and the environment and natural resources of the Pacific Northwest. NEDC is based at Lewis and Clark Law School in Portland, OR and combines a legal staff of two attorneys and an executive director with the hard work and dedication of student volunteers. Every year in October, NEDC hosts a three day retreat at Camp Westwind on the Oregon coast where the Salmon River meets the Pacific Ocean. The setting itself is a natural wonder: rugged beaches and tidal zones, a biologically diverse estuary, mountainous dense coastal rain forests, and an array of wildlife including bald-eagles, elk, sea lions, bears, and mountain lions. The retreat is an incredible combination of guest speakers on a variety of environmental law related topics, nature hikes, camping, music, and delicious local foods and fine crafted ales. I had the great privilege of joining a few of the retreats and working to provide NEDC with photo documentation of the event. Here are a collection of images from their story:
